Mission

Our Mission

The Writing Program at UC Davis is dedicated to advancing the study and practice of writing as a vital, interdisciplinary force for learning, discovery, engagement, and action. We provide students with the knowledge and ethical grounding to become effective communicators who can adapt to diverse audiences, contexts, and purposes. By combining rigorous rhetorical education with opportunities for creative and applied practice, we prepare students to contribute meaningfully as writers and communication specialists working in healthcare, software, manufacturing, government, entertainment, community, and other organizational contexts.

Our mission is to create an inclusive and welcoming environment where all students feel valued and supported. We view writing as both a tool for individual expression and a collective practice that shapes culture, knowledge, and social change. Through courses, mentorship, research opportunities, and internships, the faculty in the Writing Program:

  • cultivate critical thinkers who can analyze and respond to the rapidly changing ways that people use writing, technology, and information to communicate;

  • foster connections across disciplinary, professional, cultural, and civic boundaries;

  • encourage students to see writing and information design not only as an academic endeavor but also as a means of global engagement and civic participation;

  • collaborate with industry and community partners;

  • pursue scholarship and teaching that advances innovations in the fields of writing studies and technical and professional communication while remaining deeply responsive to the needs of our communities; and,

  • strive to ensure sustainability and effectiveness by continually assessing our programs, evolving new technologies and our writing practices with those technologies, and preparing students to thrive in a world where communication practices change rapidly.

The Writing Program seeks to develop students who will make impacts in the world. Graduates enter fields such as UX/UI, technical writing, and technology-driven industries where their innovative approaches are vital. Alumni work in businesses, community organizations, and NGOs, where they shape goals and foster public engagement.
